Witch Hazel
Â
Hamamelis virginiana. This native deciduous shrub blooms in the late fall and is valued for both its color and medicinal properties. Even after all the leaves have fallen, the bright yellow flowers persist through November, giving it great winter interest. Best planted in full sun to part shade, Witch Hazel can tolerate a variety of soil types but prefers acidic soils rich with organic matter. This shrub is great for rain gardens, windbreaks and erosion control. 18-24" whip plant. Zones 3-8
PLANTING
Dig a hole as deep as the roots and wide enough to allow the roots to spread. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Prefers slightly acidic, moist soil. Amend soil with compost prior to planting if necessary. Water regularly.
