(Crocus sativus) The saffron crocus is the producer of the most expensive spice in the world. The labor involved in harvesting the bright red thread-like stigmas on the fall-flowering bulb is what attributes to the sky-high prices. Aside from the flavor of the stigmas, these lilac-colored flowers are a beautiful sight and can be found blooming early to mid-autumn. The contrast of the purple hue and the orange and reds of the fall foliage is stunning. The saffron crocus is a great addition to the garden for both the spice and some late-season color. Zones 6-8

Saffron crocus

I planted them I think in November thinking they would come up in the spring but surprisingly some of them bloomed in either the end of November or early December. I collected the saffron. What a treat. I do hope they come back in the spring but if not I’ll plant more. So fun.

Bloomed first fall!

These bulbs are excellent. I planted them as instructed and they bloomed within weeks. They are in a coldframe bed that I've mulched deeply with straw. As I'm in an area that is now considered Zone 6, I'm hoping they overwinter with a little of this TLC. So happy to be adding this to our garden. Thank you, Pinetree Seeds.

saffron crocus

Excellent. I was at first dismayed to learn too late that saffron crocus are recommended for zone 6 and above. However, I was delightfully surprised to discover that they bloom in the fall, and were in full flower about a month after I planted them! I suppose I won't see them again here in Western Mass, but it was a good show.
