FRECKLES LETTUCE (70 days)

Germ 4-10 days
A unique and attractive romaine. Medium green leaves are freckled and blotched with burgundy spots. Flavor of the meaty leaves is great and they are very slow to turn bitter. Adds interest to any salad. 500 seeds

PLANTING:

Indoors- 3-4 weeks before planting outside. Sow 1/4” deep in cells with soil temps 55-70 degrees. Transplant out 8-12” apart.

Outdoors- Sow 1/4” “deep, 1” apart. Thin to 6-12”, depending on the size of lettuce you want from baby to full heads. Keep moist during germination.

Harvest- cut whole head at base or individual leaves before lettuce starts to bolts and becomes bitter in the heat and long days summer.

Tips- Plant into fertile soil with lots of organic matter and adequate water for optimum growth. Sow heavy seeded rows every 10-14 days for baby greens using the 1 oz. Pinetree Lettuce Mix for a season long supply of lettuce.

    sweet flavor

Freckles has a mild, sweet flavor. It usually dies rather than bolts when it gets hot. Summers are hot and dry, and we have clay soil, so gardening is tough. Freckles performs well under those conditions, though not as well as other lettuce/greens. But I love the flavor and color it adds to my salads, so I keep buying the seed.

    Lettuce Freckles

Since you ask. This is an absolute favorite lettuce of mine. The only two plants that germinated out of the entire packet are wonderful. All other lettuces (5-6 types from various suppliers, including Pine Tree) that I planted the same day - all direct-seeded outdoors and watered in the exact same way had 100% germination. What was the problem with "Freckles" - have others had the same experience I had with these particular seeds from Pine Tree this year???

    Best lettuce

It lasts much of the summer in a very tasty state, long after other lettuces have quit or refused to germinate.

High germination rate. Gorgeous in salad mixes or alone. Nice tender but substantial texture.
