AILSA CRAIG EXHIBITION ONION (HEIRLOOM, 105 DAYS)

5

Germ 5-10 days / LONG DAY
British Heirloom 1887
This fine large onion has gained a big following in the past several years. Bulbs in excess of 3lbs are possible, but the real virtue of this variety is the quality. Color is a snow-white, centers are bull’s eye single, tops are vigorous, and the flavor is very sweet. Great for slicing raw. Every year that we grow it we reaffirm that Ailsa Craig is the biggest, the earliest, and the best. 150 seeds

PLANTING:

Indoors- 8-10 weeks before last frost with soil temperatures 60-75 degrees. Plant in flats 1/4” deep, 1/4” apart. Transplant seedlings out mid/late spring, 2-6” apart. Liquid fertilize seedlings every 7-10 days. Seedlings should be about a pencil thick in size at planting time.

Outdoors- Sow lightly, 1/4” deep early spring. Thin to 2-6” apart.

Harvest- Stop watering a week before harvesting. Pull out when tops fall over and skin develops. Cure them by drying them until the neck is dry, out of direct sunlight, in a warm area, and in single layer so air can circulate around them.

Tips- Plant into fertile soil with lots of organic matter and adequate water,1” per week for optimum growth.

The best!

I've been buying this seed for years. I'm amazed this variety is not better known.. They grow to an amazing size, are mild and sweet and keep well. I never buy onions from one season to the next.

Best onion ever planted

A wonderful onion. Been planting them for about 4 years now. Are large, tasty and keep well enough for us. I've been gardening for about 50 years and this is best Onion I've ever raised. I start them indoors is early Feb.

Ultimate sweet onions

For me, these are easily the best variety of large sweet onion. They are perfectly shaped, deliciously mild and crisp. They don't store for months and months, but last longer than other sweet onions I've tried. I suggest starting them indoors, then setting them out in a block about four inches apart. You can then harvest every other one at smaller sizes and enjoy them over a long season, leaving the rest to grow impressively large. This is the onion to grow if you love onions like I do.

Stupendous

These were the biggest and easiest onions I've ever grown. Most were 3" across, some as much as 4". Great flavor, and kept well. This variety will always have a place in our garden.
