The Winter Garden

by Jane Sterndale-Bennett. During the Victorian era many municipal authorities built huge ornamental conservatories as entertainment venues, and the term winter garden soon began to be applied to these mini palaces. Used for band concerts, dancing and other entertainments, they were filled with exotic plants, often richly scented. Public gardens now have more scope and many are planting special winter borders or entire gardens, no longer under glass, but part of the general garden landscape. With increasing numbers of ornamental plants introduced, we are able to do even more with our home gardens now. Some trees have interesting color and berries that will last throughout the winter. A variety of grasses, evergreens, and some persistent perennials will also give color and structure to your garden through these months. Soft cover 160 pp Pub at $19.95
