MALABAR SPINACH - RUBRA (110 days)

Germ 14-21 days
Large, meaty leaves are remarkably spinach-like in flavor. Deep red stems of this vine provide a beautiful back drop in the garden. In fact, Basella Rubra, this plant, is used very effectively in the agricultural display at Epcot center. 100 seeds

PLANTING:

Indoors- 6 weeks before last frost 1/2” deep with soil temperature 65-75 degrees. Soak seeds 24 hours to add in germination which can take up to 3 weeks. Transplant 2-3 weeks after last frost.

Harvest- Pick leaves and use like spinach.

Tips- Loves the heat but requires constant moisture (mulch well) and 80 degrees plus for superb growth. Supply a trellis for this climbing vine.

    Malabar seeds

Germination was maybe 80 %. Plants are not yet out so don't know about performance, taste, or other attributes.

    Great germination

It did take a while to germinate, but every seed is growing. I even transplanted them to a different row in my garden when they were a few inches tall and they are thriving. I can't wait for my first harvest which will be in a few days. Thank you!

    A new treat

I tried this this year with some misgiving, but I am glad I did. I served this lightly steamed and stir fried. Both ways were excellent. A new must for my garden. I was a little leery about the texture of the leaves, but cooked it was good.
