Hardneck -Rocambole type. An heirloom variety named for a town in Maine. Acquired by Maine seed savers from a man in Rome, NY whose Italian ancestors came to work on the Erie Canal in the 1820’s. Wrapped in a colorful exterior with purple streaks, producing 6-12 cloves per bulb. Dark brown-skinned cloves are easy to peel and known to store longer than most types. Cloves are spicy with some underlying sweetness. Planted in composted amended soil the 1 ½ -2-inch bulbs will produce hearty sized bulbs the next season. Don't forget to harvest and eat the scapes (Soup, Pesto, Hummus) the following spring or leave a few onto produces bulblets for planting next fall.
