2020 Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year!Golden Japanese Spikenard is an uncommon edible shrub-like hardy perennial with vibrant golden chartreuse foliage all season. A native to the shady forests of Japan and eastern Asia, Aralia adds an electric brightness to a shaded garden or lower light areas of a yard. Clusters of tiny white flowers appear in late summer, followed by panicles of purple berries that birds adore.  It is a cultivated crop in Japan for its edible young shoots, called Udo, the flavor is said to be a mix of celery and fennel with a kick of lemon and also used traditionally in Korea for its medicinal properties. This plant is quick to form a mass of foliage, growing to 3-4’ or more in a season then dies down in the winter and reappears in the spring. Can be grown in a container too. When planted in deep shade the foliage will be more lime green. 3” container grown. Zones 3-8
