The 2 to 3-foot plants produce abundant rounded 8 to 10-inch leaves and small greenish-yellow flowers. This is the original tobacco smoked by our Native American forebearers in ceremonies. It contains nicotine and produces a very effective natural insecticide.

Annual

Germination: 7-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-75ºF

Seed Planting Depth: Sow on the surface, seeds need light to germinate.

Starting Indoors: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Provide 70-75ºF soil temperature. Transplant after the last frost, 10-12" apart. 

Sowing Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, Sow lightly and thin to 10-12" apart. 

Growth Habit: Upright

Light Needs:  Shade to sun

Soil Needs: Rich, well-drained

Approximate days to flower from seed: 75-90 days

Uses:  Flower beds, containers, attracts pollinators and beneficials

Care: Water seedlings regularly until established. Amend soil with compost before transplanting.  Cut back stems as the blooms fade, this encourages more flower production. Reseeds easily.
