Sambucus canadensis. Boost your immune system with both the flowers and berries of this North American native plant. Have a go at creating extracts or tinctures, even syrup for your pancakes (we love this as an alternative to maple syrup). Also, try your hand at drying the berries for tea; there is a long list of possible uses. Once established, the plants spread by putting out suckers allowing a colony to form. Rejuvenating easily, the colonies can be managed by pruning back in late fall or very early spring. They grow naturally along river banks and roadsides but perform perfectly in any moist, well-drained soil. Zones 3-8.

PLANTING

Plant in full sun, 3’ apart in rows 4-5 feet apart. Soil needs: well-drained, rich and loamy. Adaptable to most soils. Elderberry roots are shallow and will not tolerate drought. Mulch and keep well water until established. Prune broken or dead canes in the spring.

Elderberries arrive in good condition.

I received my plants and they arrived in good condition and with no issues. I planted them as soon as they arrived and they are now growing. I am looking forward to having them produce next year at least. I would buy from Pinetree Gardens again. Very happy with all my order.
