Allium tricoccum

Ramps, a wild, beloved member of the allium family, are an early spring leek with bold onion and garlic flavor. Naturally found in shady, damp woodland areas, this vernal treat is a slow grower and can take 2-3 years to be of harvestable size when planted from bare-root bulbs. Plant in an environment that mimics a shaded deciduous forest, with leaf litter and cool, damp soil. Enjoy a sense of foraging each spring by planting these delicious treats!

PLANTING

Bare root bulbs should be planted as soon as possible after delivery. Plant in a rich wooded area with filtered light. Choose a site void of evergreens such as pines, laurel, holly, etc. Plant 3” deep up to 1’ apart with the tip up, slightly above the ground. Cover with leaves from hardwoods. If you do not have a wooded area available, use a shade structure, such as shade cloth, over the planting area to mimic forest canopy conditions. Provide adequate moisture throughout the growing season, not just during new growth periods. To ensure harvestable ramps for years to come, only harvest 15% of the plot each year. The active growing period is early and short. They die back in the heat needing protection from the harsh sun.

    ramps

I planted them, it has rained so much I haven't checked to see if they grew and now it is faily late in the season, the ones I got last year at least have partially avoided deer ravaging

    ?

They disappeared after I planted them. Although they seemed small, as expected, I did not expect the bulbs to die. There were no holes, and I have dug in the area without finding them. I suppose I may get lucky in the fall and see them growing again, but at this point? I cannot give a good review, and really don’t know if a review is warranted yet.

    Review of Leek Order

I was pleased to see Ramps available, and they all appeared to be in good condition. The Ramps I planted last year did not take, so this year I selected a different location for this order. I know they are fussy. I will not know until spring of 2020 if they survived.

    Ramps

My experience was good, however I don’t have any growth showing on the ramps. I also would like to order some more.

Hi Polly - So frustrating!! I'm sorry that the deer had a feast. We are struggling with groundhogs here. Happy Gardening
