Nero di Toscana Kale (Heirloom, 55 Days)

Italian Heirloom 1885. Also known as Lacinato or Dinosaur Kale, the plant is 3’ tall with dark, meaty, puckered leaves, the color of a blue spruce. Striking ornamental leaves have good flavor harvested young and cooked simply in olive oil. Mature plant has a stronger flavor, which improves after a frost.

PLANTING

Brassica oleracea

Germination: 3-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-85ºF.

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/2” deep

Starting Indoors: 4-6 weeks before last frost. Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/pot. Thin to the strongest seedling. Fertilize the seedlings every 7-10 days with a liquid or water soluble fertilizer, diluted to ¼ of suggested measurement. Transplant a week or two before last frost. Space 12-18" apart. Sow in midsummer for fall crops. 

Sowing Outdoors: Starting in spring when soil temperature reaches at least 55ºF. Sow 2-3 seeds every 12-18”. Sow closer to harvest baby greens. Thin to the strongest seedling per space. Sow in midsummer for fall crops. Germination is slower at lower soil temperatures.

Harvest Pick young leaves starting at 8-10". 

Tips: Plant into a fertile, well drained soil.  Leaves become very sweet after frost. Use thinning’s or sow a heavy seeded row every 10-14 days for baby greens.

Most Successful Kale Chips Ever

It was great, despite the pandemic. Yes, things were a little delayed, and we got the seeds into the ground later than usual, but the fact we got them is impressive.

Nero di Toscana Kale is the Best Tasting Kale

In the past few years, I have grown several (4) types of Kale. In the future I will only grow Nero di Toscana since it has a wonderful taste, like broccoli, and it is easy to slice and make kale chips with. It is the best variety for kale chips which causes me to willfully eat more kale than I otherwise would.

First time growing Nero di Toscana Kale

The seeds were all uniform and in good condition. The germination was 100%. So I’m hoping for a great crop!

NERO DI TASCANA KALE

Along with this kale variety, I planted two other varieties of kale. The cook of the house, my lovely wife, demands that I pick only the NERO DI TASCANA variety for our use. The only disadvantage of this variety -- slugs also like it.

Good for salad, smoothy, soups

Leaves are narrow and very wrinkly. Small leaves so that is why we give it a 4 stars.
