Basil is a staple in many Mediterranean dishes and enjoying them as microgreens is a perfect way to have that fresh garden flavor in the winter. They take a little longer time to grow than other microgreens but are well worth the wait plus you can just leave them to grow in their tray/container, harvesting for an extended period.
Germination: 5-7 days
Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-75ºF.
Sowing: Sow the seeds very close together. 1/8-1/4" apart. Press into soil, cover lightly
What To Grow In: Seed starting trays, 20 row seedling flat, or any sort of low, flat container
Soil: Use a regular potting mix or soilless medium
Lighting: Adding supplemental lighting with grow lights during the winter will help with stronger, less leggy growth. They can easily be grown in the garden, on a deck/patio, or even a sunny spot in your house during the rest of the year.
Days to Harvest: 15-25 days
Harvest: Start cutting when the first true leaves appear or when they reach 1 1/2-2 inches.
Growing Tips: Maintain good air flow for greens by not over sowing seeds and by watering lightly. Over watered soil and overly dense sowing with no air flow can cause damping off. For a continuous harvest of micro greens sow every 7-10 days.
