Bushy heads of finely dissected, curly narrow leaves are used raw in salad mixes, adding a slight bitter flavor or prepare wilted or sauteed for more mellow taste. Blanch the center heart by tying the head up, 5 -7 days before harvesting to create a creamy color, delicate texture and flavor. Plant in early spring or fall- best when matured in cooler weather.
Germination: 4-10 days
Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 60-70ºF. Soil temperatures above 80ºF inhibits germination.
Seed Sowing Depth: ¼ inch deep
Starting Indoors: Start 3-4 weeks before planting outside. Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/pot, thinning to one per cell/pot. Provide 60-70ºF soil temperatures. Transplant out during spring, 8-12” apart in rows 12” apart.
Sowing Outdoors: Spring when soil temperature reaches at least 50ºF. Sow a few seeds every 2-4” apart, thin to 8-12”. Keep soil moist during germination. Sow every 2-3 weeks for a longer harvest period.
How much does a packet plant: 18-20 foot single row

Tips: Grows best in spring and fall with temperatures under 70ºF. Plant in fertile, well drained soil. Amend with compost before planting if needed. Provide adequate, even moisture for the best growth. Mulching helps retain moisture.
