Black Sea Gladiolus is easy to grow and makes a spectacular, long-lasting cut flower! The flowers arrive on tall spikes, rising up 3-4 feet with showy flowers that hug the stem and bloom from the bottom up. Perennial in zone 7 and above. In colder zones simply pull them up in the fall and store them over the winter then plant again the following spring.

Order multiple varieties in sets of 10 (1 order of corms)

PLANTING

It is best to plant gladiolus when the soil warms to 60ºF (soil too cool can cause the bulb to rot). They may be planted in well-drained soil, 3-5” deep allowing 4-6” between each corm. Rows should be 12-36” apart. Try not to plant up against a structure so that they get plenty of airflow. Hill the soil 6” up around the stalk to prevent glad from tipping over in any wind. Store corms over the winter in zones 7 and colder.

STORING CORMS

  • Pull up from the soil at the end of the season, after the first frost but before it gets below 28-30ºF.
  • Remove the stalk, cut down to just above the corm, 1-2”
  • You can save the small, baby corms. If you plant the corms the following year they will grow larger and in 1-2 years they will become large enough to produce flowers
  • Dry the corms in the sun for 1-2 days, then cure them in a warm, well-vented location for a few weeks.
  • Store in paper or cloth bags. Store at 35-42°F with low humidity.
