Black Egg Eggplant (70 Days)

The fruit resemble black bombs or teardrops because both the skin and the calyx are a deep black with a purplish tinge. This is the only eggplant we know of with a black calyx. Japanese in origin, Black Egg produces unusually tender fruit on vigorous 3’ plants. Sets fruit early (even in cool weather) and is best picked early.

PLANTING

Solanum melongena

Germination: 5-14 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 75-90ºF. Cooler soil temperatures increase germination time.

Seed Sowing Depth: ¼” deep

Starting Indoors:  8-10 weeks before last frost. Sow in flats/cells/pots. Provide 75-90ºF soil temperatures. Fertilize the seedlings every 7-10 days with a liquid or water soluble fertilizer (diluted to ¼ of suggested measurement). Transplant seedlings 18-24” apart after last frost.

How much does a packet plant: 25-30 foot single row

Harvest: When fruit is shiny and smooth, before losing its luster. Use a sharp instrument to cut the eggplants from the plant. Pick the first fruits when they reach usable size, this helps accelerate the growth of the other eggplants on the plant.

Tips: Plant in fertile soil, amend with composted if needed. It helps to use row cover early in the season, giving the plants extra warmth, especially in the north. Side dress when flowers begin to form.

I planted the seeds of Black Egg last year 2020 and they produced very well

i have used Pinetree seeds for years I am always pleased with their service and notifications. I have never had a problem with germination I appreciate the "just right' amount of seeds in a package and I am thankful for the prices. I would recommend Pinetree to any other gardener I have been gardening for well over 50 years and I am only 39 hahaha

Black Egg Eggplant

I decided to try Black Egg because the catalog said it produces unusually tender fruit. The skin of most eggplant is somewhat "chewy." We live in South Carolina now where the gardening season starts early. I planted the seedlings in the garden on April 12. The plants are doing fine except they have been badly infested with flea beetles. I have sprayed with Safers Soap and also Neem oil extract several times but the beetles are still there. The plants are still growing and about a foot tall now. Will see what happens.

Alittle disappointed

I love the variety and your prices but.... it seems the germination rate is low. A friend who starts all her seeds inside on a warming mat w grow lights had to replant my beets to get enough starts, the same with broccoli and eggplant. Have others found this?

Black Egg Eggplant

I was really looking forward to growing this eggplant. I planted it in the same medium and at the same time as all my other early starts and not a single one of the Black Egg seeds germinated, whereas everything else I planted germinated just fine.. By the time I gave up hope on them it was too late to replant. Luckily I had planted another variety as well. Very disappointing.
