Pinetree Winter Lettuce Mix

These varieties will extend the lettuce season into fall and winter. Plant after the heat of summer for an early fall crop (after Labor Day in southern areas), or plant in a cold frame in the north. Don’t plant too early or they’ll bolt.

500 seeds

1/2 Ounce Packet (approx. 15,000 seeds)

Lactuca sativa

Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 60-70ºF. Soil temperatures above 75 ºF inhibit germination.

Seed Sowing Depth: ¼ inch deep

Starting Indoors:  Start 3-4 weeks before planting outside. Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/pot, thinning to one per cell/pot. Provide 60-70ºF soil temperatures. Transplant out, 8-12” apart in rows 12” apart.

Sowing Outdoors: Spring when the soil temperature reaches at least 50ºF. Sow 1” apart, thin to 6-12”, depending on the size of lettuce you want, baby to full heads. Keep soil moist during germination. Sow every 2-3 weeks for a longer harvest period. Sow heavy seeded rows every 10-14 days for baby greens using the 1/2 oz. Pinetree Lettuce Mix.

How much does a packet plant: 25-40 foot single row

Harvest: Cut whole heads, full-sized or baby at the base, or snip off individual leaves.

Tips: Lettuce needs fertile soil for optimum growth. Work in compost or well-rotted manure into your soil before planting. Provide adequate, even moisture for the best growth. Mulching helps retain moisture.

Omg, baby greens at Thanksgiving!

I can't say enough about this mix. I started them in early September, and even after temps have dropped into the 20s at night, with frosts, these greens keep on growing! And they're a beautiful blend of greens, reds, and speckled leaves. A new fav here in MA 5b!

So much lettuce!!!

I planted a part of a pack of this mix in early spring and they just went wild. I really didn't pay them much attention as I was busy with peas and thinning and weeding carrots, plus I had to get the tomatoes and peppers all set in and the supports up. But I was gathering bowls of lettuce almost daily at the end of all the other work and they just seemed to go and go! We enjoyed this mix so much I grabbed another packet for this next year, even though I was able to save a few seeds from some of the varieties. I wanted to be sure we had it on hand (as I've never saved lettuce seed before). Easy to grow and tastes wonderful.

Good late season lettuce

I had good results planting this mix in late summer, in contrast to other years when I either don't seem to time it right or have the wrong seeds. Due to our long fall the lettuce is still producin nicely in NH in October.
