St Valery Carrot (Heirloom 60-80 Days)

Heirloom 1885. According to the 1924 James Vicks catalog, “The best and most handsome main crop carrot. Enormously productive, very desirable for private gardens as well as for markets.” This is an improvement on the very old “Long Orange”. 10” roots are sweet, tender, & delicious. Stores well.

Daucus carota

Germination: 6-14 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 60-85ºF. The cooler the soil the longer it takes for germination, up to 3 weeks.

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/4” deep

Sowing Outdoors: Start 3 weeks before last frost into mid-summer. Sow lightly, thin to 1-3” apart. The larger the carrot variety the more space needed between them. The soil moisture should be maintained regularly until germination, letting soil dry out during this period may result in lower germination.

How much does a packet plant: 10-12 foot row

Harvest: Start when carrots reach finger size for baby carrots. Carrots planted for summer harvest will hold in the ground for a few weeks but tend to split if they stay in the ground too long. Late season carrots hold longer and become sweeter in the cooler weather.

Tips: Using a row cover helps to maintain moisture for germination. Carrots prefer a loose soil, free of rubble. Use the shorter varieties for heavy soils. Keep well weeded and cover any exposed carrot with soil or mulch to prevent greening. An excess of nitrogen in the soil cause the roots to become hairy.

St. Valery

I have grown St.Valery for several years. They have always done well for me. Very crisp even after storage for several weeks. Last year was somewhat dry in our area. I neglected to water regularly. Towards the end of the season I pulled one that was 13 inches long and had a small pencil size root continued another 5 inches. Most are around 10 inches in length

St. Valery Carrots

Have grown them for several years. Large quite uniform and exceptionally sweet with good storage life. Do not surface water for best uniform carrots. Will grow to two or three inches diameter. Leave in ground until heavy frost for maximum sweetness. Highly recommended.

Good variety to try

Nice sized carrots, good taste. Not too sweet, but not a bitter taste either. Several of mine split but I attribute that to dry, then very wet weather this year. And I left them in too long. Pick early and water regularly and this variety will make a good carrot
