New Red Fire Lettuce (45 Days)

Described as a variety “slow to bolt”; is an understatement in our experience as it holds without bolting better than most. One year, we picked from the same planting the entire season. Very early variety and one of the most attractive lettuces with a very deep red color & impressively frilly leaves. Very pleasant taste. Resistance to Downy Mildew.

300 seeds

Lactuca sativa

Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 60-70ºF. Soil temperatures above 75 ºF inhibit germination.

Seed Sowing Depth: ¼ inch deep

Starting Indoors:  Start 3-4 weeks before planting outside. Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/pot, thinning to one per cell/pot. Provide 60-70ºF soil temperatures. Transplant out, 8-12” apart in rows 12” apart.

Sowing Outdoors: Spring when the soil temperature reaches at least 50ºF. Sow 1” apart, thin to 6-12”, depending on the size of lettuce you want, baby to full heads. Keep soil moist during germination. Sow every 2-3 weeks for a longer harvest period. Sow heavy seeded rows every 10-14 days for baby greens using the 1/2 oz. Pinetree Lettuce Mix.

How much does a packet plant: 25-40 foot single row

Harvest: Cut whole heads, full-sized or baby at the base, or snip off individual leaves.

Tips: Lettuce needs fertile soil for optimum growth. Work in compost or well-rotted manure into your soil before planting. Provide adequate, even moisture for the best growth. Mulching helps retain moisture.

New Red Fire is a winner

I have grown this variety for at least 5 years and agree with all the positive comments. We can usually get 2 harvests before bolting. I thin to at least 12" apart for best growth. Slugs and snails do not like it!

repeat customer at Pinetree

I've bought seeds from Pinetree for many years. I like their seeds because I have the option to buy a smaller seed packet than a lot of other places which results in much less seed waste. Pinetree offers a great variety of seeds. My orders are always processed quickly and that's a plus.

This lettuce is a colorful mix of red and green. It does not bolt and germinates well. I have grown it for many years.
