Detroit Beet (Heirloom, 63 Days)

Detroit has been the leading crop beet for the last 20 years, but has been grown for over 100 years. The crimson of the flesh also shows in the leaves. Large, smooth roots are produced but it is also good for greens at an earlier stage. Freezes & cans well with exceptional flavor.

300 seeds

Beta vulgaris

Germination: 5-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 50-85ºFSoaking seed overnight aids in germination.

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/2” deep

Starting Indoors: 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Sow 1-2 seeds per cell/pot. Thin to 1 seedling per cell/pot. Transplant outdoors when the first true leaves appear, 3” apart.

Sowing Outdoors: Early spring with soil temperatures at least 50ºF. Sow 1-2” apart, thin when plants are 2-4” tall, 3-4” apart. Germination is slower at lower soil temperatures.

How much does a packet plant: 20-25 foot single row

Harvest: Begin picking at 1” for baby beets and up to 3” across for the most tender and best tasting. For best storage cut off the greens 2” above the top of the beet.

Tips: Beets “seeds” are actually fruits that contain multiple seeds inside with several seedlings emerging from one seed. Use the thinned seedlings for beet greens or plant a heavily seeded row for baby beet greens. Beets need to grow rapidly and evenly by providing soil rich in organic matter and adequate moisture. Sow every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest.

Detroit seeds

All your seeds were fantastic. Our garden is growing like crazy. This is our first year using Maine soil. Even though enhanced the soil. I was still hesitant. Our garden grew like crazy. I did the beets in above ground planter boxes. We have chipmunks and gophers. The beets were great. Tomatoes are abundant. Squash and pumpkins are growing like crazy. I found you because of covid and could not get seeds anywhere else. You are now my number one source for seeds.

Beans, Beets, Lettuce, Radishes and Spinach. I can't leave out the inoculant.

During the past few years, I had used all the above items and found them to be just as I had hoped. The inoculant made a big difference with the peas and beans...for the better. The vegetables were delicious and plentiful. I'm planning on getting the majority of my cold weather crops in this next week. Have started the tomatoes, peppers and eggplant inside and am hopeful to see them popping through the seed planting medium. Thanks so much for a great product and super helpful staff. Have a great Spring and Summer.
