PLANTING

Cucurbita pepo

Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-85ºF

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/2-1" deep

Sowing Indoors: 3-4 weeks before last frost. Provide 70-85ºF soil temperature. Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/pot. Sowing into individual biodegradable peat/cow pots reduces root damage when transplanting. Transplant 36-48" apart after last frost.

Sowing Outdoors: Sow after last frost when soil temperature is over 70ºF. Sow a few seeds every 36-48".

Harvest: Check and harvest a few times a week. Cut or kindly twist off fruit, starting at a 3-4”.

Tips: Plant in fertile soil, amended with compost or well rotted manure and keep well watered. They benefit from growing on black plastic and by using row covers for weed, insect control, and more rapid growth.

Cocozelle Summer Squash

I've been doing my seed shopping with Pinetree for many years. I keep going back because the service is excellent and the seeds have always been a success. The added bonus is that the amount of packaged seeds is just right for the home gardener. I have enough for my own garden and enough for extra plants to sell at my garden club's annual plant sale. Cocozelle is a favorite summer squash of mine and everyone I've shared it with.

Cocozelle Summer Squas

This is one of my favorites as it seems more tolerant to the squash vine borer. I’ve quit trying yellow and zucchini squash in my area. Yearly spraying with beneficial nematodes seems to have helped. The taste is good and I have plenty to share with friends. Service has always been great.

zucchini

Cocozelle is an Italian favorite due to its rich flavor and tenderness, even when it gets big (like 16" long). One plant will keep a family of 2 in zucchini all summer. We saute it with onion, peppers, garlic and tomato, or add tofu, beef or chicken. Powdery mildew can attack it, but will not harm taste or production; this variety is no wimp. Plenty of air movement discourages mildew/ Grow Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) nearby to attract the tiny, stingless wasps whose larvae prey on vine-borer eggs and Gusto!.
