Black Beauty Zucchini (Heirloom 55 Days)

An old heirloom zucchini from the 1920s. The classic, black-green fruit is very productive with a firm flavorful interior, very tasty raw, picked right from the plant. Harvest under 6-8 “ for the best quality or pick extremely young for gourmet baby zucchini.

PLANTING

Cucurbita pepo

Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-85ºF

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/2-1" deep

Sowing Indoors: 3-4 weeks before the last frost. Provide 70-85ºF soil temperature. Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/pot. Sowing into individual biodegradable peat/cow pots reduces root damage when transplanting. Transplant 36-48" apart after the last frost.

Sowing Outdoors: Sow after the last frost when the soil temperature is over 70ºF. Sow a few seeds every 36-48".

Harvest: Check and harvest a few times a week. Cut or kindly twist off fruit, starting at a 3-4”.

Tips: Plant in fertile soil, amended with compost or well-rotted manure, and keep well watered. They benefit from growing on black plastic and by using row covers for weed, insect control, and more rapid growth.

All the seeds have produced, so far!

I always plant extra seeds expecting less than half to produce. So far, each seed planted grows. I haven’t harvested any vegetables yet, due to a learning curve. I’ve planted my first potted garden and planted too many bean plants that the Zucchini did not have room to grow.

Excellent!

Direct-sown in early June in southeast MI, Zone 5. Planted in a black plastic raised bed with plenty of compost. I think every single seed germinated, my 7 and 8 year old kids loved watching how quickly the plants grew and how fast the fruit came in. Perfect for a “kids garden”, perfect if you want an easy, no-fuss guaranteed load of zucchini. We’re a family of five and we eat it a lot, and I’m still giving some away every week! Very prolific and disease-free so far with no pesticides, no fussing.

Good germination and service

Seed germinated very well. We had adequate rainfall so they came up with very little extra watering. Plants have done okay considering we have been in moderate drought conditions for June and July. Their production has been slow and minimal. But the zucchini I have harvested has been good. I have ordered from Pine tree Seed for many years Their service has always been very good.
