Muncher Cucumber (60 Days)

While the vines are compact they are also very strong, making Muncher a fine choice for container growing. It is a Middle Eastern Beit-Alpha type so the skin is very smooth and practically spineless. Delicious, burpless, and never bitter. The heavy yields of Muncher also pickle well at about the 4” size. It will reach 9” at full maturity.

 20 seeds

Cucumis sativus

Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-85ºF

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/2-1" deep

Sowing Indoors: 3-4 weeks before last frost. Provide 70-85ºF soil temperature. Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/pot. Sowing into individual biodegradable peat/cow pots reduces root damage when transplanting. Transplant 36-48" apart after last frost.

Sowing Outdoors: Sow after last frost when soil temperature is over 70ºF. Sow a few seeds every 36-48".

Harvest: Check and pick every day to keep the harvest flowing.

Tips: Plant in fertile soil, amended with compost or well rotted manure and keep well watered. Trellising the vines allows for good air circulation, takes up less space and provides shade for heat sensitive crops like lettuce. They benefit from growing on black plastic and by using row covers for weed, insect control, and more rapid growth.

seed order

The experience was fine. The seeds arrived in time to start some indoors. Spring in far northeastern MN is very late, so only the seeds germinated inside are up. Pinetree is one ofmy favorite places to go for seeds.

shorter and fatter than expected

Choosing by the description and reviews, I was expecting the cucumbers to be 6" long and less than 2" wide. They are 1" wide at only 4" long. If allowed to get longer, they also get bigger - the 5" length approaches 2" wide. The wider they are the seedier they are. The texture isn't quite as crisp as I was expecting, but flavor was good. They are spineless, but slightly fuzzy. I was hoping for something like the "snackers" popular in grocers today, but these are not like them. For crispness, flavor, and size, Summer Dance is a better choice, but those aren't the compact length of grocery store "snackers" and the seed is more expensive. Although these didn't meet my expectations, they are a fun variation to add to our cucumber collection, along with Marketmore, Suyo, and a volunteer cucumber that is albino.
