Homemade Pickles Cucumber (54 Days)

The ideal size and shape of these cukes as well as the crisp texture and good flavor make it the quintessential pickler. Whether picked small for tiny gherkins, medium size for dill spears, or large for bread & butter slices, these short, plump cukes are perfect. The 2-3’ vines are vigorous and prolific, ensuring that you’ll have plentiful homemade pickles. Resistance to angular leaf spot, cucumber mosaic virus, downy and powdery mildew.

Cucumis sativus

Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-85ºF

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/2-1" deep

Sowing Indoors: 3-4 weeks before the last frost. Provide 70-85ºF soil temperature. Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/pot. Sowing into individual biodegradable peat/cow pots reduces root damage when transplanting. Transplant 36-48" apart after the last frost.

Sowing Outdoors: Sow after the last frost when the soil temperature is over 70ºF. Sow a few seeds every 36-48".

Harvest: Check and pick every day to keep the harvest flowing.

Tips: Plant in fertile soil, amended with compost or well-rotted manure, and keep well watered. Trellising the vines allow for good air circulation, takes up less space, and provides shade for heat-sensitive crops like lettuce. They benefit from growing on black plastic and by using row covers for weed, insect control, and more rapid growth.

Pine Tree seeds

I am in Fl; the seeds in MD , and the garden in MA . Just weeks away from planting. Pine Tree is the best seed company for northern gardens, but the variety, quality, and price of seed packets prove its top marks in its national customer base of avid vegetable and flower aficionados. It’s catalog carries tools and equipment for every planting need and often is the only place to find reasonably priced items. Over 30 years of being my go-to seed and garden purveyor!

Fantastic cucumber success

I am 63 and have NEVER had the kind of success with cukes as I did this year! I gave my sister 18 lbs of cukes yesterday and I am going to make relish and bread and butter pickles with about the same amount today. And they’re still blooming and bearing! Thanks so much!

Homemade Pickles

I love Pinetree Garden Catalog!! My pickle vine is growing well and covered with blossoms even though we haven’t had much rain since beginning of June. I’ve started harvesting and need to pick twice a day to get small pickles for Sweet Candied Dills. Also doing bread and butter. Great product!
