  1. A Taste of Heritage

A TASTE OF HERITAGE **sold out**

by Alma Snell. What Emma Byler did in Plain and Happy Living (L182) for the Amish, Alma Snell has done for Western Indians. Snell, a crow Indian, relates the traditional wild plant knowledge, herbalism, historic and modern cooking traditions that she picked up throughout her life. She stared early, learning much from her grandmother, Pretty Shield, a midwife who lived from 1856 - 1944. When she met and married Bill Snell, an Assiniboine Indian, she discovered his tribes plant uses as well. The two lived on many western reservations and she continued to learn from each. Snell worked as a cook, so she avidly collected recipes. Her book is divided into two sections - food, and medicinal plants and healing. In the first, she provides numerous recipes for plants gathered in the wild, garden vegetables, fish, fowl, and game animals, along with traditional breads and beverages. Snell adapted the recipes to more practical methods of preparation for easy use. Her section on medicinal plants and healing is outstanding. She describes the plants and exactly how they are applied, with extensive narrative on her experiences using them. All her stories are from personal experience. She has used and administered every plant mentioned and cooked every recipe. This makes her book a truly unique treasure, no to be missed! Softcover 191pp Learn More

  2. A Time to Blossom

A TIME TO BLOSSOM **sold out**

Mothers, Daughters and Flowers. By Tova Martin. Photographs by Richard W. Brown. Brown's photography is exquisite, each photo a carefully arranged tableau evoking romanticized images of young girls, mothers and flowers. Everyone wears vintage clothing (from the 1800s, 40s and 50s). Martin's text is equally evocative as she reminisces about her own childhood and the special place flowers and her mother hold in it. We follow her through the seasons as she delivers May baskets, climbs apple trees, picks lilacs, makes hollyhock dolls, or hangs out in her neighbor Mrs. Logee's nearby greenhouse (lucky kid!). She also includes instructions for mother/daughter projects for the next generation. Hardcover 160 pp. Pub at $35.00 Learn More

  6. Beautiful Madness

    BEAUTIFUL MADNESS

by James Dodson. A writer by trade, as Dodson developed a passion for gardening, he became curious about how this obsession affected others. A year-long journey through other peoples gardens brought him all over the world and introduced him and his readers to wonderful cast of characters. An amiable person who connects easily with others, Dodson found that one obsessed gardener always leads to another, then another. He started his year behind the scenes at the Philadephia garden show. Then he traveled around public and private gardens in the US, until someone convinces him he must see the Chelsea Garden Show. Off to Chelsea and more gardens in Britain until he finally, he hooks up with a nurseryman who invites him on a plant hunting safari in South Africa. It's a lot of fun traveling with Dodson. He is funny, warm, generous, and insightful about all the gardens he encounters. Hardcover 289pp. Pub at $24.95 Learn More

  7. Buffalo Bird

    BUFFALO BIRD WOMANS GARDEN

As told by Gilbert L. Wilson. A book that is hard to put down - one of the most interesting we have read. In 1917, anthropologist Gilbert Wilson recorded the recollections of a year of gardening activities of Buffalo Bird woman, a Hidatsa Indian born in 1839 in North Dakota and raised in the tradition of sustainable agriculture. It is a fascinating account of how the women (they did all the agricultural work) broke ground with a digging stick and planted extensive crops of corn, squash, beans and sunflowers. Buffalo Bird Woman tells of seed varieites, harvesting, drying, saving seed and food preparation. She also recalls songs, stories and ritualistic ceremonies essential to a successful harvest. Captivating reading. Softcover 129pp Learn More

  12. Farmers of Fourty Centuries

    FARMERS OF FORTY CENTURIES

By F. H. King For thousands of years, Asian farmers have cultivated the same land without exhausting the soil's fertility and supported very dense populations. In the early 1900's, F. H. King, an official of the U.S. D. A. studied organic farming methods in China, Korea and Japan firsthand. He relates his observations in this amazing book, first published in 1911. He was impressed with Asian farmers methods of conserving and utilizing natural resources. They planted intensively, often growing two to four crops per year on the same plot, and constructed elaborate canal systems for irrigation. They let nothing go to waste; fuel ash, canal mud, organic refuse and manure, were all used to build soil fertility. King also studied their reforestation methods, land reclamation, and the cultivation of diverse crops, among them rice, mulberry for silkworms, and tea. He provides wonderful descriptions of the farmers lives and the places he visited. Over 240 black and white photographs from his trips illustrate the book. An altogether fascinating glimpse of another culture, with lessons for today. Softcover 441 pp Learn More
